what I missed

the kind one
a small-town boy, 
gazing with care and desire 
who honored my edges
oh, those soft lips 
Mom, not supportive
his dad’s hardware 
store waiting—she wanted 
more
for her daughter

I stepped away   
allowed 
a suave city guy
who didn’t like to kiss
to snag my attention
