Springtime
a quatrain ballad
This form is a quatrain ballad. Structure: 4 stanzas of 4 lines each (a quatrain). Rhyme: The end words of the second and fourth lines of each stanza rhyme. (This is called an abcb rhyme scheme.) Rhythm: I kept the suggested rhythm of 8 syllables, 6 syllables, 8, and 6 for each quatrain. I'm here to report that form that demands structure, rhyme, AND rhythm is NOT EASY!! Springtime I keen mournful songs—the daily planetary losses mount at rampant, sinister speed becoming thunder albatrosses Yet new shoots push through yielding soil responding to light’s call their courage lifts my darkened mood I twirl in May dewfall Songbirds sing out from tree to tree warm breezes ruffle hair Clouds build, dissolve, stack up again Spring sex is in the air With it comes hope—life’s tonic brightening my outlook I dash for home, quick search—smiling. resurrect my sketchbook
