when it’s their time 

a vet tech decades ago
the hardest days
car-versus-dog
     racing heart
     panting
     eyes begging
severe pain signs
their human, focused 
on their impotence
cries do something!
the vet assesses
     shattered pelvis
     broken skull
     internal bleeding
levels his gaze
best let her go
