$135 a plate, we’re invited for free
batik, bell bottoms, wigs 
everywhere    bald men 
sporting blond ponytails
others with hair dyed blue, 
fake peace sign tattoos

When bidding starts, my eyes
as wide as a 5-year-old’s surprise
good grief     I can’t afford 
a starting bid, fret over
needing new shoes 
Auctioneer’s patter    bidding 
paddles raised here, there
everywhere—
item after item
bringing in $3,500, $5,000, more
Money sprouts on some trees
but not on mine 
That’s just fine
