She’s Home Our young sick four-legged companion, home at last after seven endless days, not eating or drinking on her own now claiming her couch once again—a tentative diagnosis atypical Addison’s— can’t make cortisol, hormone for coping with stress definitive test by late Friday I recalled fireworks on the Fourth of July and her quaking—first time in three years. Finally eating and drinking again, no cure, only steroid regimen we’re relieved by something to do This may shave years or months from her life but offer well-being I’ll take it count blessings be glad
The definitive diagnosis is not back yet. We know she is not making steroids--I think her level was .02. (YIKES!) No wonder she reacted fearfully to the fireworks this year, and not in previous years. But the actual test for Addison's is not back yet. Hopefully by late today.
She seems to be tolerating the steroids fine so far--she's eating (but not too much), drinking (but not too much), cheerful, ready to go for a walk. I'm assuming this will shave months if not years from her life--she's just three--but she's the dearest, most affectionate dog we've ever had, and I'll be happy for however many years we get. I'm aware she is also our last dog.... we really can't afford it.
If you can share more about what we can expect, I'd appreciate knowing it.
This episode? Somewhere between $3000-$4000. Durn, I should have gotten doggie insurance....
relieved they have a diagnosis that can be treated - hope she tolerates the steroids well!

gladness comes in many forms...
yes, it does, doesn't it.
Go Jazz! That’s a pretty good toast-rack stance.
Love the photo! Reminded me of Toynbee's quote: "To be able to fill leisure intelligently, is the last product of civilization."
