ah, my heart so much with you. We had the small classes and an issue for us with my very tall child was that he was almost as big as the teacher and 8" taller than the other kids. Many lessons on not hitting, etc...Mainstreaming him would never have worked so I can only imagine the difficulties and pain inherent. "Our lone galaxy..." ah yes. Thank you for allowing this to come to light.
He ended up back in special ed. It turns out he had real reading problems that didn't get addressed until I found a one-on-one program 3x a week between the ages of 14 and 16. He went from reading at a first-grade level to college level in two years.
But that teacher--sheesh. I don't even think she tried.
