Today, my dog withstood
an onslaught
heedless herding pup
no manners at all
but my girl, the elder
at three, forbearing
youthful indiscretion
All the while, new war
in the Middle East
and that man started it
We are culpable,
didn’t prevent him
innocents, children
pups hushed into rubble
