The cone of shame, is how I've heard it referenced. Our vet sells what I'll call healing suits....dog clothing that provide the same "bandaid" covering while allowing the dog to heal. And doesn't isolate.

I want your vet’s contact information! Phone number, email? To ask about these healing suits.

Didi, this one made me smile. The poor dog, completely defeated by the cone, and then that final stretch into freedom. I especially loved the line about becoming “weary wardens.” Such a tender and funny observation. ❤️

Yes humorous, but also heartbreaking. I couldn’t tell her WHY we had to do this. I experience dogs as so conscious—yet a consciousness different from ours.

Didi, that makes it even more heartbreaking. ❤️ We can explain the reason to ourselves, but they don't have that explanation. They only know what is happening to them. And perhaps that different kind of consciousness is exactly why dogs can make us feel so deeply seen.

Yes, exactly. Dogs have been my deepest wordless friends since forever. Jazz is funny, because she is most deeply attached to my husband. Smart girl. He doesn’t stuff pills down her throat, or take her to the veterinarian. Only the fun stuff. And I think she prefers his scent. (I never, ever wear perfume—dislike the stuff.)

That makes perfect sense, Didi. 😊 Jazz has clearly figured out who is responsible for the fun and who is responsible for the unpleasant necessities! And perhaps scent is part of the secret language dogs have with us. No perfume needed—apparently, your natural Didi scent is just fine. ❤️

I love that you call dogs your deepest wordless friends. There is something very beautiful about a friendship that doesn't need an explanation.
