humans, too
although numbers are rising
As our buildings grow taller
—half mile straight up—
compassion is shrinking
governments grow harsher,
hoarding freedoms
for the rich the compliant
raking back assistance
from those in need
Yet in the midst of carnage
kindness shines
How to keep on, live
in the face of hubris’ harm?
Resistant, like life?

How to respond, act
in the face of greed’s, hate’s hell?
Insistent, like love?
